I am a bit ancient and new to all this mobile phones business. I signed a 12 month contract about 6 months ago with T mobile. They give me 60 minutes free phoning land lines a month which I can roll over to the following month. Text messaging costs

1 - Yes, you can cancel your contract but you would have to pay for the rest of it. You said it was a 12 months contract signed 6 months ago and you pay 20/month so to cancel it, it would cost you

Mobile phones started life as the two way radio, which was also called mobile rigs. These were installed in vehicles such as minicabs, police cars and ambulances, but were not strictly mobile phones as they were not normally connected to the telephone network. While the very first mobile phones were installed permanently in vehicles, later versions such as the transportable, also called bag phones, could also be carried, and can be used as either portable or as mobile two-way radios.
North Korea Confiscating Mobile Phones | NDN

A group of dissident defectors from North Korea is reporting that the government of the hermit kingdom has begun a drive to confiscate mobile phones smuggled in from China. North Korea is one of the most disconnected countries in the world-- no good data on mobile penetration is available, but rates are presumed to be in the low single-digits, with much of that coming from smuggled phones.
This further crackdown indicates a fear within the government that access to outside information could lead to revolt. Given the way communications technolgies has aided rebellion across North Africa and the Middle East this year, the timing of this is hardly surprising. From the AFP story on this:
