Initially, the solar powered readers will collect data from Bluetooth-enabled devices and GPS units.

The computer that processes the information will make a note when the same device passes the next signal reader, and calculate the time of travel.

The information will then be displayed on live traffic signs, traffic maps on the Internet, and distributed to email subscribers.

TxDOT said that “the information collected by the signal readers cannot be identified with a specific person or vehicle, and the system takes further steps to make the information anonymous before using it to estimate travel times.”
