Adding GPS to boat will the depth finder interfere with fish finder?

Adding a gps/depth to boat. The boat has a fishfinder on it already. Will the two transducers interfere with each other?

i added a Garmin unit that has a fishfinder which works better than the old fishfinder. the transducers will not interfer if you mount them several feet apart.

Electronic devices such as an auto pilot, a chart plotter, and radar fall into the category of marine electronics. Certainly a rowboat would not need a full complement of marine electronics, but a boat GPS and a portable fish finder would likely be useful even in a rowboat. Even a small row boat can benefit from a sonar unit which can be used to find fish or sound the depth of the water, and once you find those fish you can always use a GPS unit to mark the spot.

As the boat gets larger It can travel farther out and you will want to add a radio for safety to maintain communication with the mainland. A chart plotter and radar would come after the radio as the size of our ‘boat’ moves toward ‘ship’. When we get to the yacht or ship category you will have electric fuel systems and probably an electronic compass.

A solar battery charger might be an emergency resource to prevent the loss of power to all of this vital equipment though it is by no means a requirement. As with any electronic equipment, your marine electronics will need to be properly maintained because you don’t want to end up lost in the middle of the water, unless you are looking for adventure.

The weekend boating enthusiast more then likely does not have the art of old time navigation down to a fine art like sailors of old.

It has been the subject of many Science Fiction plots, but the question of what man would do if all of his technology disappeared is a valid question? Like any good Boy Scout you should always have back up equipment or at least some non-electronic navigational skill. The technicians of today would be lost without their electronics because they are so used to having computers and electronics do all of the work, that they have nearly forgotten how to do it them selves.

There are students in our schools who can’t add 15+17 without a calculator. You might think this is an exaggeration, but as I have tutored math I assure you it is quite accurate. Back in the stone age we used slide rules. You will be hard pressed today to find anyone who knows how to use a slide rule.

As out technology advances we tend to forget how to operate without it. You should not worry about getting lost at sea if you are planning going on a cruise because the marine electronics rarely goes down and there should be at least one trained navigator on board, just make sure his name isn’t Gilligan.
