How to properly use Etrex H for geocaching?

I just started geocaching and found my really old Garmin Etrex H. I know how to use it still, but I can not get it to give me a good reading anywhere. I mean, it knows which direction im moving if i move fast. But if I just turn, the compass doesn't work.

The Etrex does not have a magnetic compass. Direction can only be determined by moving via the GPS function.

If you turn, but remain in the same spot, the GPS says you are at the same location and thus cannot determine compass direction.
