I will start off by saying that Mortal Kombat is a game that throws all the previous 3D entries out the window and creates a wonderful fighting system that is takes a little from form other fighting, but also manages to bring enough new material to make it stand along from the competition. All previous Mortal Kombats have never really tried to compete against the likes of Street Fighter, Tekken or the VS series and instead focuses more on the ‘WOW” factor with gore and fatalities. Mortal Kombat finds a delicate balance between the two and delivers are pretty well-balanced fighting game that provides us a great escape from Street Fighter 4 and Marvel VS Capcom 3. They’re 27 characters in the game with no exclusives (curse you PS3 with your addition of Kratos). Each character has it’s own unique move set of combos, special movies, throws and fatalities. The usual suspects are there (Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Lui Kang, Shang-Tsung and Reptile) while a few surprises made the cut (Noob-Saibot, Cyber Sub-Zero, Styker, Kabal and Sindel). Only Quan Chi and Cyber Sub-Zero have to be unlocked. As much as I loathe unlocking characters in a fighting game, it’s not really a pain to unlock the two characters.
